Take a Trip to Pick Up Paint Swatches

Paint offers you the easiest and most affordable way to change the appearance inside and outside your home. With so many color choices available for virtually any interior or exterior painting project, you can become overwhelmed with the selection process. You want to make sure that you choose the best color scheme for your project and ensure the coordination of colors, from room-to-room. You can actually find a variety of easy to use resources to assist you in your quest to choose the right colors with confidence. When you look at colors in the local paint store, keep in mind that the intensity and placement of lights can make the shade appear different. The last thing you want to do is buy a gallon of paint that you don’t like. Instead, use large color swatches to help you find the best paint for your project.

Start with Color Deck/Paint Chips

Many people make the mistake of basing their final color selection decision on paint color chips from a color deck, which makes it difficult to evaluate the undertones and other distinctions. Using paint chips as your starting point, choose the paint colors that seem to work for your project. For inspiration, pull color ideas from furniture, drapery, pillows rugs or other accessories. The key is to make sure that the color chips complement and look right with the existing design elements in your home. As you evaluate each color, make note of what you like and dislike. For example, you might not note that a particular shade is too dark or too light or needs more intensity. Now, narrow your color choices down to 3-5 colors.

Create Color Swatches

paint samplesYou can get a better idea of what the colors will look like on the wall by making color swatches. These swatches allow you to get a much better sense of the true color under varying conditions and against different elements. You can purchase sample-size containers fom your local paint store. Instead of brushing paint on an inconspicuous 6-inch square area of the wall (behind the sofa), construct big paint color swatches by brushing the paint on 1’x1’ poster boards.

The painted poster boards offer the flexibility you need to test colors in different areas and against objects. In addition, you eliminate the pressure to get started with the project just to get rid of the sample paint brushed on the wall, and take the time you need to make the correct decision.

Test Your Color Swatches

The paint swatches help you determine whether or not the shades and differences in temperature, intensity, and undertones complement the existing colors. View your color swatches, at eye level, in the following ways:

  • Individually
  • Side-by-side
  • All four walls, ceiling, carpet/flooring and woodwork
  • Under natural and artificial lighting
  • Different times of the day-- morning, afternoon and evening.

Also, make sure that you test your color options against cabinets, woodwork and countertops, window treatments, pillows, furniture and wall art. When evaluating the color, focus your eyes on the swatch, but isolate the existing color on the wall. Creating and testing color swatches is inexpensive and takes time, but the technique ensures that you find the color scheme that looks and feel right to you. Remember, you waste both time and money if you decide you do not like the colors and you have to re-paint the entire room.
