The arrival of 2014 brought with it new palettes from paint companies. They range from muted shades to bold hues, with each collection featuring only complementary colors. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites so far from industry leaders: Behr, Sherwin-Williams, Glidden and Benjamin Moore.
Behr 2014 Paint Color Combinations
Whether you want to create a tranquil setting or make a grand statement, Behr offers options. Here are two standout color combinations:
Seaside Harmony - Pulling from the colors of the coastline, the palette in this dining room example uses the cool aqua blue of Ocean Liner as the main wall color, with Miami Peach providing contrast on the ceiling and the warm off-white Miami Weiss adorning the trim. The color scheme works in just about any room in the house, looking best when paired with tarnished metal, waxed wood and cotton knit decorative elements.
Grand Reign - This palette complements a stately home decorated in the traditional style. The study example uses the luxurious burgundy of Imperial Jewel on the upper portion of the walls, giving way to the creamy white of Grand Soiree at the trim, ceiling and windows, with the dark gold of Coronation below. A room in these colors makes a dramatic statement.
Sherwin-Williams 2014 Paint Color Combinations
The 2014 HGTV Dream Home shows off the company’s ability to create colors that balance comfort, practicality and style. The wall of windows in the family media room shown serves as a work of art, with the grey khaki of Dovetail providing a neutral backdrop. Barcelona Beige, White Duck, Black Fox, and Snowbound are other neutrals in the color scheme, with pops of color provided by Bamboo Shoot and the dusky blue of Distance.
Glidden 2014 Paint Color Combinations
This paint company presents its color schemes in a variety of ways, with "by theme" as one of the options.
Celebrate the Move - These bold hues make a new house feel like a new home. Deep Amethyst with Honey Beige and Silver Birch creates this bedroom fit for a queen, while Onyx Black, Spiced Gingerbread and Clay Bisque turn the living room into a modern, striking space. Sugared Lime, Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Iced Purple in the dining room create a bright, fresh mood for breakfast on through to dinner.
Man Cave Colors - The masculine colors in this collection will put his stamp on a special room. Walnut Bark suits this pool room nicely as a statement wall, complementing both the dark wood floors and the lighter Stone White on the wood paneling.
Benjamin Moore 2014 Paint Color Combinations
More than 30 colors make up this company’s “New” Neutral color palette. In this stairwell example, the blue of Breath of Fresh Air covers the walls, complementing the Van Alen Green on the risers and creating a distinctive look with an attention to detail not typically paid to this area of the home.
In addition to working well together within a room, this collection allows for visual ease of transition between rooms. In the Florida plantation house example, Palladian Blue in the living room flows into the White Dove of the stairwell, which gives way to the Van Dusen blue of the hallway and Distant Gray in the bedroom.
The same holds true for the Connecticut farmhouse shown, with its combination of Sparrow, Breath of Fresh Air, Clay Beige, White Dove and Flint.
Shopping color palettes as presented by the manufacturer take the guesswork out of choosing hue that work well together. If you simply must shop outside of a collection, be sure to bring your color wheel with your or ask the advice of your professional painter.
