Exterior Paint Primers
A Primer on Exterior Paint Primers
Using a good primer is critical to achieving a beautiful, even paint job. Primer is designed to properly adhere to and seal surfaces, preventing paint from peeling. Unlike paint, it is specifically designed for application on bare substrates, such as stucco, wood, metal, and masonite.
Primer is usually white, however you can often add tint in a color that matches the top coat. This will result in a better overall color application. Multiple coats of primer may be necessary when applying a drastic color change, e.g. dark to light, light to dark, solid covering stripes, etc.
Shiny paint that is in good condition will still need to be primed. Surfaces that are optimal for painting possess the same four qualities: clean, dull, dry, and primed.
